Templemore Baths is an exceptionally challenging project. The existing building is listed at Grade B+ by DoE Historic Environment Division, giving it regional importance which reflects its architectural, cultural, social and historic merits. It is the sole surviving Victorian Public Baths in Ireland, and one of a very small number across the United Kingdom. McAdams partnered with leading conservation specialists Consarc to both conserve and refurbish the existing facility whilst also providing a modern yet sympathetic extension on an extremely restricted site.
The project was successful in obtaining Heritage Lottery funding as our proposal retells a significant historical story whilst also providing state of the art new leisure facilities. The proposed heritage spaces are appropriately located in the most significant parts of the existing building and are fully accessible for the visiting public to enjoy. The new build extension respects the sensitivity of the historic buildings and streetscape and the work has been designed so as it does not damage, distort or obscure the significance of the original Baths. However the solution is contemporary allowing it to be clearly distinguishable from the existing historic structures and contains a new 25-metre competition pool with moveable floor and spectator gallery.
