Since its commissioning in 2006, the new Fofanny Water Treatment Works has attracted widespread attention from industry and public alike as the only buried water treatment plant in Ireland. Designed to treat up to 52 million litres of water a day (52MI/d), this state-of-the-art Water Treatment facility replaces the old, highly visual Fofannybane plant, promoting a more attractive environment and safeguarding the supply of high-quality water for many years to come. Its forward-thinking and environmentally friendly design was centred around the fact that the Works is located in the heart of the Mourne Mountains, a designated ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’; part of the Countryside Policy Area and a candidate for National Park status and World Heritage Site.
This £18m design and build project was undertaken by Northern Ireland Water in partnership with Farrans (Construction) Ltd, Earthtech Engineering with McAdam undertaking Architectural, Civil & Structural Design.
