Located on a prominent corner site this modern 14 class base Primary School incorporates a landmark listed building and historic stonewall whilst also preserving several large mature trees. Designed and delivered on a very restricted existing site whilst the original school remained fully operational the new scheme responded imaginatively to the client’s brief. Conceived around a 2-storey central courtyard which provides a safe play area for the youngest children the building optimises natural daylight throughout. Clusters of 3 classrooms huddle around shared resource spaces which promote an intimate atmosphere whilst also ensuring excellent supervision of the children’s activities. In addition, the school seamlessly integrates a stand-alone two classroom Speech & Language unit which ensures a full range of teaching experiences can be delivered. A separate wing provides a 160m2 multi-disciplinary hall augmented by a further 160m2 dining hall and full-sized commercial kitchen. Intelligent positioning of these areas within the plan layout and overall site design means these facilities can be accessed and used by the local community outside school hours.
Finally, the project refurbished and successfully re-purposed a listed Building within the final school design. Previously the headquarters of the local Education Authority this welcome addition provided a connection to the sites educational past whilst also ushering in a bright new future.
